We have had the work of a handful of local artists within our shop, but nothing has proven to sell as well as the hand crafted, one-of-a-kind mugs made by Pemberton's own, Meg Gallup. If you're looking for a wonderful holiday gift or stocking stuffer, pop in and check out the few remaining mugs we have left.

We were lucky enough to be able to check out Meg in her element this past Summer. She was able to show us the entire process from kneading to firing. It was amazing. Thanks Meg!

A bit about Meg:

Meg flourished in the University of Calgary Ceramics Dept. while acquiring her Bachelor of Arts degree. She moved to BC and began a career in pottery, which she pursed in Vancouver, Whistler and Pemberton. Focusing on production of functional high-fired stoneware as well as one of a kind art pieces, she has made pottery that is enjoyed in homes throughout Canada and the United States.

This artist's creations are now fired in a gas kiln at her studio in Pemberton using glazes she personally developed. The love for hand thrown wheelwork and revealing the unique qualities that ''reduction'' fired glazes create has motivated Meg's involvement in clay for the last twenty years. Bringing art and the medium's natural beauty to household objects is a continual theme in this potter's work.

Some of the finest coffee on earth is grown in Costa Rica. While traveling there last month, we were fortunate to visit a coffee farm just outside the town of San Marcos De Tarrazu. Countless family run coffee farms cling to the steep hills surrounding this bustling coffee town.

The afternoon mist rolls in. Banana trees are planted between the coffee plants to give the soil nutrients and provide shade for the coffee.

Minor Picado is a third generation coffee farmer. He is taking his farm to the next level by currently constructing his own micro-processing facility. This will enable him to process and export his unique lots of coffee directly to quality coffee roasters. It ensures that his signature "La Pastora" coffee will not be blended with lesser quality coffee. The niche market of "direct trade" relationships motivates the farmer to produce the highest quality coffee. The price they receive directly relates to the quality of their coffee.

The first few coffee cherries are starting to ripen.

This Sunday is Pemberton's biggest Agritourism event.
Slow Food Cycle Sunday is upon us.

You will find Mount Currie Coffee Co. at Registration slinging coffee and selling Official Event Merchandise.

Please also join us 'in house' for a pre-ride breakfast and coffee, or stop in when it's all said and done and enjoy a gelato or iced mocha frappé for the drive home.

Event Details:

No pre-registration necessary.

Register on event day in the Village of Pemberton starting at 8am; farms close around 4pm.
Event is FREE (donations gratefully accepted)
Follow signs leading into town for parking and registration

Bring food and drink to carry you over! There are no stores en-route. There will be food and drink for sale at the farms, but supplies are not guaranteed to last.
Full ride is over 50km on a flat, mostly paved (farm driveways are gravel), out and back, open road. You can turn around at any point.

There will be a map at the registration area on event day.

NO dogs on farms.
Helmets are mandatory as per provincial legislation.
Share the road with cars. Give way to tractors.

We are excited to introduce Chaucer Silverson to you.

Chaucer is an amazing watercolor and acrylic painter living in Bozeman, Montana. His art includes abstract work and landscapes and is currently featured upon our walls.

Recently he created a campaign at www.kickstarter.com to fulfill the dream of pursuing his series of paintings titled "Moments of Insight", document the work, the concepts, and publish a catalog to share with backers and promote his art. His campaign was successful! He can now put down the hammer and pick up the brushes and get busy on his portfolio. Congrats Chaucer! May your dreams be as big as the ocean and the waves take you where you want to be.

Pemberton mayor Jordan Sturdy is inviting local residents to come chat with him about issues important to them in a new series of public appearances that he hopes will become a regular occurrence.
Sturdy’s Coffee with the Mayor series begins next Thursday (April 7). He said Monday (March 28) that he’s always eager to hear what Spud Valley residents have to say on local and municipal issues, and that the new program creates a dedicated setting for dialogue.
“I always get button-holed and I certainly don’t mind that — that’s part of my job. But it’s all just happenstance,” he said. “It’s like ‘Oh, there’s the mayor, should I talk to him or not talk to him? I don’t want to bug him.’ Frankly, I prefer when people come up or phone me… but I can understand why people don’t necessarily do that. “So I thought I would make a formal time available in a public setting to say ‘Here I am, and if you’ve got something to say, come and say it.’ I’m happy to listen, explain, understand or however people want to use the time.”
Sturdy said the idea to start the program came after he attended a Local Government Leadership Academy forum earlier this year that had a strong emphasis on communication and leadership style.

“It’s all about communication, understanding your community and your community understanding what the objectives of the administration are,” he said. The April 7 event takes place at the Mount Currie Coffee Company from 9 to 11 a.m., while another is scheduled for the Pemberton Legion on April 28, running 5 to 7 p.m.

Order up: one revolution, with change - Taking Whistler's corporate social responsibility pulse

It's not just CEOs (or TEOs as Ranger dubs herself), who are embedding their values into the business operations. Supercorp author Rosabeth Moss Kanter noted that values-driven businesses also empower and engage employees. "And not surprisingly, these employees are more inclined to be creative when their company values innovation that helps the world."

Max Silverson is the 23-year-old manager at Mt Currie Coffee Company in Pemberton. When Silverson graduated into a flooded job market with a degree in international political economics, he found himself stuck between the mailroom jobs (too qualified) and the positions being filled by the ranks of the recently laid-off (not qualified enough). So he came skiing.

To acknowledge International Human Rights Day he suggested to his boss and colleagues that the café's staff donate their Dec. 10 tips to Kiva.

"I think charity is awesome but I don't really know how to do it most of the time," explains Silverson. "Microfinance was my favourite type of development that I studied because of the values it represents, empowering people to do the things that they want. Kiva loans people money without interest, they pay it back and we can loan it out again. A tiny little one-day fundraiser immediately results in four to six loans that we can redistribute again and again."

In fact, the tiny little fundraiser generated $145, which owner Chris Ankeny matched, and has already been loaned to 12 entrepreneurs in Honduras, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Bolivia, Peru, Uganda, Lebanon and the Dominican Republic, who people can follow through the Mt. Currie Coffee Co's Facebook page and website.
Explains Ankeny, "We try and help on a local level with fundraisers and events as much as we can, but I thought it would be cool to help on a more global level. For me, as an entrepreneur, I know how hard it is to run a business, and I'm lucky enough to live in a first world nation."

But business has been pretty slow lately. Silverson admits he wasn't sure how successful the initiative would be. "I had low expectations. But it was awesome. People were sneaking $20 bills into the jar when we weren't looking."

Recently, the café also sourced biodegradable to-go cups, organic teas, free-range local eggs and a new supplier of quality meats that meant investing in a new slicer. "I'm taking a hit in my margins," explains Ankeny, "to try and make a better product. And it's my values, too. Do I want to be eating meat injected full of hormones? Do I want my child to? My customers? Hopefully it will help the business, as well."

THE BOTTOM LINE:
It's weird to mix poetry with profit-talk, but maybe we need to be less averse to that. As Isabelle Ranger says, "If I look at somebody in the business world, I don't normally think of 'good', and it's time for that picture to change."
The financial crisis, according to a recent piece in the Economist, was triggered by "a bout of corporate social irresponsibility on a massive scale... Now corporate leaders have a chance to show that they are not just motivated by short-termism after all."
Woody Tasch, a venture capitalist and entrepreneur, is arguing in favour of a revolution. A slow money revolution.
"We need to stop thinking about money as lubrication for a machine that is everywhere and nowhere and at no given moment, and to start thinking about money as irrigation for the field of our intentions, which are expressed right here, right now, where we live and where we work," writes Tasch in Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money.
Slow Money is both a movement and an investment strategy, a shift of the financial system towards something that serves people and place as much as it serves industry sectors and markets. He has no idea how to do it. But he's willing to say: we should connect these dots. Between our wallets and our hearts.

The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for prostate cancer. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realized the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health. Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

In 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia - representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

The Movember moustache has continued to grow year after year, expanding to Canada, the US, UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Finland.

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising $47 Million for Movember’s global beneficiary partners. We are proud to announce that last year’s Canadian campaign was the second largest in the world behind Australia, with 35,156 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas coming together to raise $7.8 million for Prostate Cancer Canada.

There is amazing local talent in the wood works here in Pemberton. We are now carrying a new line of ceramic mugs by Sünna Studio at our shop. Beautiful little 8oz. mugs which are absolutely perfect for a cappuccino or a child sized hot chocolate! Hand cut and painted details adorn the exterior of the mugs which give the mugs some serious character!

Potter, Amy Hazeldine, has been firing up a storm in her Pemberton kiln, to prepare for her first season at theWhistler Farmers Market every Sunday. Sake sets, manly mugs and big-and-little-kidlet cups are all part of the Sünna Studio line. We checked in with Amy to find out what gets her firing on all cylinders.

What does the Sünna in Sünna Studio mean?
Sünna is an Icelandic word for sun. An Icelander introduced me to my partner, Kirk, who now makes annual forays to Iceland to ski guide. He brings home the most amazing Icelandic music. The perfect combination of mellow and moody, it’s some of my favourite music to work to.

How did you end up in Pemberton?
I followed a boy! I was living in my VW Van in Squamish as a climbing bum when I met him over a game of darts. I drifted up to Whistler for a few seasons for the dating phase, then finally made my way up to Pemberton where he lived. We bought a little acreage together up here, which is where my studio is now. It’s really been an amazing place to end up.

What makes Pemberton a good place to base your business?
Pemberton is such a hotbed of creativity right now – it’s very exciting to be starting my business just as the art scene here is starting to gain momentum. The whole town is full of young, vibrant, inspired people with amazing ideas and incredible talents. It also doesn’t hurt that life outside “work” involves mountain biking and climbing and growing food.

What are the pros and cons of working out of your own home studio?
On the pro side, I’d say lounging around with a coffee in hand (in a fabulous, handmade mug!) until I feel ready to wander out back to my studio is near the top of my list. I also love that I can look outside and see my little boy running around causing havoc. Supervised havoc, of course. My partner is staying home being super-Dad right now, which is amazing. Pro – I can take a hammock break in my back yard. Pro – I can work until midnight and not have to commute home… although I’m scared of the resident cougar and bear family after dark. That can make for a very nerve-racking 4 second sprint home. Maybe that one should be a con.

How does a person become a potter?
I attribute my own potter’s path to a spectacular set of brown dishes I grew up with. I stole them from my parents and I still use them today. Fast-forward many years, I found a pottery drop-in program at Whistler Secondary, where I dropped-in a whopping total of two times before packing my bags and moving to Nelson to train at Kootenay School of the Arts. To round schooling out, I apprenticed with Whistler potter extraordinaire, Vincent Massey. I learned so much about the ins and outs of running a studio and managing the flow of work through the various stages. Then came the lengthy and laborious building of my own studio. We rebuilt a dilapidated shed that took a year and a half to revive. After plenty of hours of personal exploration with lots of successes and lots of failures, I think I can finally say I’m a potter.

What other work have you done (in your many-hatted life)?
I’ve worked as an environmental educator in Toronto with a great organization called EarthRoots and more locally with EagleWatch in Squamish. I spent four summers in Nunavut in diamond exploration camps as the cook, roughing it in a canvas tent on the tundra. I’ve worked on the assembly line making tire parts, driving a forklift and running the zamboni that cleans the factory floors. And I’ve done my Whistler time as a bartender and server. Out of all the hats I’ve worn, the potter’s hat is my favourite fit.

I’ve heard it said that you’re a little bit of a perfectionist… How do you finally know when something is done?
It’s true, I am a perfectionist. I’ve learned the hard way with pottery that if you keep fussing and trying to change things it will eventually just collapse into a big pile of gooey clay. I found it was really hard to sell that stuff. But seriously, I don’t think I ever really feel like anything is “done”. I reach a point where I’m really happy with a form or glaze and move forward with it, but I’m always thinking about what I can try in the next firing, how I can tweak a glaze recipe to alter the surface a bit, or what could I change about a form to make it more interesting. That’s the exciting part of pottery – there’s so much room for exploration.

What kind of materials do you use to create your line of pottery and glazes?
This is the really fascinating part. I essentially take clay from the earth, dip it in ground up rocks and minerals that have been mixed with water into a slurry, then throw it into the equivalent of a volcano so they melt into a glass which coats the clay. My favourite glaze right now is a gorgeous creamy white that I’m using on my line of sake sets, children’s mugs and cappuccino cups. The glaze is made with 8% tin and the white is the result of the metal re-crystallising on the surface, giving it a really lustrous finish. It’s amazing to think about. Some other common colorants I use are iron, chrome, cobalt, etc . It’s pretty wild chemistry and I definitely geek out on a regular basis trying to achieve a certain colour I have in mind.

What’s the process for creating one of your lines?
I always start with a sketch and put it in front of me while I throw on the wheel. I’ll often take weeks practicing the same form over and over until it’s second nature before starting to produce them. I guess this goes back to the perfectionism. I also like to use the finished product for a while to really figure out how it feels in the hand and if the design functions well.

What was the impetus to launch your business?
I don’t think there was an “impetus” so much as a sudden realization that I needed to launch my own business. I went to school in Nelson so I could be a potter. I don’t think I really thought about owning my own business necessarily, but there definitely aren’t too many wanted ads for working potters. Launching my business was a pretty natural step.

What kind of feedback are you getting at the Whistler Farmers Market?
The feedback has been incredibly positive. I was completely out-of-my-head nervous the first day I showed my pottery at the market – it’s pretty scary putting your art on display and sitting back hoping people will come along and look at it. But all’s gone really well and quite bit of my work has sold already, which means I’m running back into the studio in full-on production mode again. The Sake Sets on Walnut Trays are definitely getting a lot of attention – it’s a pretty unique item. The trays are actually made by my very talented sister, Julia Hazeldine Bonnell of studiohazel in Burlington, ON. It’s been very fun collaborating with her on that piece and we’ll be doing more joint projects down the road. The little cream cups with hand-cut clay detail are also getting quite a bit of attention. I originally designed them as children’s cups but quickly realized that many people wanted a bigger version for cappuccinos. I’ve upped the size and now it’s a dual purpose cup.

If you don't know her, you should. She is not only über-creative with an amazing eye for all things beautiful, but also a very calm, collected and funny! The room lights up when she is in it and the world is a better place because she is here.

This series of photographs is a beautiful one, focused on the beauty of Mexican culture. Vibrant colors, sand beaches and street art have transformed our shop. So if you can't get away to some warm sandy beach this Fall, not to worry. Your little bit of paradise can be found here.

Rad Boob Club Ski Calendar AVAILABLE NOW!

In Golden, British Columbia, there is a group of girls called the Rad Boob Club. Reacting to the exclusivity of the unofficial Rad Dude Club, these ladies can be found out skiing the best lines in B.C. Recently, this group of skier chicks created the Rad Boob Ski Calendar to raise funds for the Rethink Breast Cancer Foundation. Available for $20 here at MCCC or online, the 12-month photo gallery features athletes such as Ingrid Backstrom, Grete Eliassen, and Lynsey Dyer. And sorry fellas, but there’s no nudity—just ski action and lifestyle shots.

Whistler based freelance writer, skier, and calendar designer, Holly Walker felt privileged to be a part of the project. “I had a stroke last winter, which provided me with a lot of free time on my hands,” Walker says. “I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my time, than to get back into graphic design and help the girls out.”

This winter the girls of the calendar will be touring to different ski resorts to sell their product and pass out information on breast cancer awareness. Check out the website [radboob.com] and find more information on Rethink Breast Cancer awareness foundation [rethinkbreastcancer.com].

MCCC is pleased to announce that Betsy Barnum has her work up through the Fall.

Betsy is a Seattle based artist, who creates artwork that is not only captivating but also deeply layered and full of life. Her current series contains scenes of flight, growth and portraiture that is subtly infused with pattern and soft tones.

Artist Statement:
I use my works on paper to describe my life, expressing my thoughts and emotions about a specific moment or circumstance through my relationships with those I am close to. I build up thin layers of paint, ink and pencil to conceal and reveal images the way emotions and behavior are unconsciously layered to hide or signal something to others. The gesture and composition of the figures in my work are very important, as they are the first indicators of the work's meaning.

I use recurring objects from piece to piece as symbols or metaphors for people and ideas. For example, I often use a typewriter to represent myself, or birds as metaphors for fear and emotion. I use paper as my surface because of its flexibility, smoothness, and capacity for erasure. Like a palimpsest, it shows the progression and history of layers of marks. Like skin it wrinkles and fights back when worked on, asserting its personality into the painting or drawing. Like journal pages, my work is an ongoing narrative, each piece chronologically linked to the others. Each gesture, color, layer, and object is significant, and each work interacts with the others to establish meaning through a repetition of these elements.

Betsy Barnum has an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute and is an artist, designer and maker of things. You can't help but love her. Come by and see her work for yourself!

Hailing from The Land Down under...

Liks grew up riding the Melbourne train system "The Met", through the late 80's and early 90's. Seeing the works of such artists as Merda, Duel, Ransom, Zane Bug, Tame and Puzle, Liks quickly became consumed with graffiti, creating an obsession which remains to this day.

One of the first canvases Liks ever worked on was his parents’ shed in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia, when he was a teenager. Believe it or not, his parents didn’t yell or punish him for releasing his cans of spray paint — they encouraged him to express himself and bought him his first book on graffiti - "Spray Can Art".

When he was 19 years old, Liks moved to the beautiful mountain resort of Whistler. He only intended to stay for one season, but his love for the mountains kept him longer. Although embracing the laid-back mountain lifestyle, his passion for street art is undeniable. Combined creativity and strong work ethic have resulted in various successful projects with local businesses, and clients abroad.

When Liks isn't painting or sketching, he is probably snowboarding if there is fresh powder on the hills, or chilling with his girlfriend and dog Moe on the couch. Through the encouragement of friends and family, his passion for graffiti has snowballed over the years. Liks is happiest when he is painting, engrossing himself in graffiti on a daily basis. In the future he hopes to continue to grow and brighten our dull, boring walls everywhere- giving people something to look at and enjoy.

Featured Artist: Erik Otto

This Spring we are fortunate enough to feature the artwork of Erik Otto: an artist, graphic designer, and art director born and raised in the South Bay Area. He is a graduate from San Jose State University, where he studied Illustration and Animation. After graduation, Otto moved to San Francisco, to be a part of the fast paced art and design environment a bigger city provides. He has since worked with companies such as Urban Outfitters, Old Navy, Jansport, Wells Fargo, and HBO and recently was awarded the Jury Prize at Cut & Paste’s Digital Design Tournament for 2007.

Otto’s personal artwork is exhibited in galleries nationally and is represented by Shooting Gallery in San Francisco.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I consider myself a process artist and it is often during the act of scavenging for materials that I meditate and develop the concepts for the work I am about to create. I often leave the initial stages of my work open and uncertain while intuitively working out a resolution that will decide its final outcome based on the suggestive qualities of the medium and materials at hand.
Through my artwork and installations, I am narrating an autobiographical story that depicts the struggle to connect my awakened state to the desires found within. Pulling from what builds me as well as what tries to destroy me, my goal is that through my work, I may find peace in creating and questioning my own existence. In a world that seems to have fallen apathetic in wanting to make a difference, my hope is that my artwork is an honest reminder of the importance of dreams and the necessity of living a life of significance.

We at Mount Currie Coffee Company are proud to have the photography of Chris Ankeny on our walls. Before his role at MCCC as owner/operator, Chris spent a majority of time in the mountains as a professional photographer. The snowy images are little windows to a culture we love and embrace, mountain life. We are able to live vicariously through Chris' lens and fly over huge Alaskan peaks as well as shread the spines found in the surrounding peaks right here in Pemberton. Enjoy!

ARTIST BIO:
The first time Chris stepped foot in the Pemberton Valley it happened to be atop Mount Currie. A very lucky situation had presented itself and he found himself filling an empty chopper seat headed for Currie. That was more than 10 years ago... ever since that day he made it a personal goal to relocate to this dreamy valley. After being here a few years now, he has found that the quality of Pemberton life to be unmatched, from the relaxed pace to the endless expanse of mountains, there is a lifetime of adventure to uncover here.

As long as he can remember, Chris’ life has revolved around the thrill of skiing and snowboarding. It is the beauty found in the mountains and the endless exploration for the next zone that keeps every season just as exciting as the last. The natural beauty of the mountains, the tranquility and labor of ascending them, and the thrill of the descent is what Chris tries to capture and transmit to the viewer of his photographs. The mountains have provided so much fulfillment in his life that it feels like a personal responsibility to try and share these experiences with others.

The dialogue that takes place between the artist and the canvas is as important as the interaction between the canvas and its viewer. This is how art is able to permeate our culture. It is a crucial step in the constant ebb and flow of creative energy. This step is of great importance to our souls and peace of mind.

I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona surrounded by the desert. I had a childhood that was inundated with graphics from skateboards, rock bands and an explosive pop culture. I was fortunate to travel from an early age and have a great appreciation for "otherness" and cultural diversity. Other early influences included the nascent pop surrealism movement and the art of Maurice Sendak, Ralph Steadman, Joe Sorren, Derek Hess and Robert Williams; to name a few. My work has been shaped and reshaped by various subcultures ranging from skateboarding, punk, jazz, hip-hop music, and spoken word, to a lifestyle centered in the mountains.

In the early 90's influenced by friends and artists, I began the journey of a self taught artist. In my earlier portfolios, I experimented with psychedelic and tattoo art. Fifteen years later I paint full time, communicating my imagination through images. My most creative moments are infused with motion, music and color. My art has become more than a passage of time. Betsy Barnum has an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute and is an artist, designer and maker of things. Her collage is featured at Mount Currie Coffee Company for the months of March and April 2008. Betsy lives in Edmond, Oklahoma and loves traveling and going places she's never been. "I have lots of goals and projects I'm working on, and mostly I just want to live my life and create things that mean something to me."

Betsy's work features many layers and dimensions leaving you with a piece of her personality and beautiful worldy outlook...

"I use my works on paper to describe my life, expressing my thoughts and emotions about a specific moment or circumstance through my relationships with those I am close to. I build up thin layers of paint, ink and pencil to conceal and reveal images the way emotions and behavior are unconsciously layered to hide or signal something to others. The gesture and composition of the figures in my work are very important, as they are the first indicators of the work's meaning. I use recurring objects from piece to piece as symbols or metaphors for people and ideas. For example, I often use a typewriter to represent myself, or birds as metaphors for fear and emotion. I use paper as my surface because of its flexibility, smoothness, and capacity for erasure. Like a palimpsest, it shows the progression and history of layers of marks. Like skin it wrinkles and fights back when worked on, asserting its personality into the painting or drawing. Like journal pages, my work is an ongoing narrative, each piece chronologically linked to the others. Each gesture, color, layer, and object is significant, and each work interacts with the others to establish meaning through a repetition of these elements."

ABOUT KAREN LOVE:

I was born and raised in Kleinburg, Ontario, home of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. While growing up I spent a lot of time at the gallery and in the woods and fields surrounding it. The Group of Seven, Tom Thompson and Emily Carr, naturally, were huge influences on me. As a girl I participated in many sketching outings led by A.Y. Jackson, who lived at the Gallery in his twighlight years. We'd go out to the wooded gallery grounds and sketch, and he'd be pushed along in his wheel chair and talk about our work - and his. While I'm very interested in abstract painting and often go through abstract phases, my greatest enjoyment comes from expressing nature's fundament though art.

I studied fine art at Art Sake Inc., a school known for experimental painting, and continued my studies at Sheridan College School of Craft and Design, BCIT, Emily Carr Design Institute, and at Capilano College. I spent four years traveling, working and living in the Canadian Arctic, both in the Yukon and the North West Territories. Naturally I'm an avid outdoors-woman - I really enjoy paddling, horseback riding, mountain biking and running.

I spend a lot of time wandering our farm property in Pemberton, BC, always discovering new beauty in the field, forest, pond and garden. Nature's colours and geometric shapes are incredibly interesting to observe through the different seasons.I often find my own artistic development through my children and through teaching others to paint. Children are such great observers and love to spend time examining at nature's most minute details. I've spent my working life immersed in the visual arts - as a graphic designer, photographer, muralist, decorative painter, silversmith and painter. For many years, my husband and I owned and operated a marketing communication firm with a national client base. We moved to Pemberton in 1990, and have two children.

FORMER BIG MOUNTAIN PRO, TURNED INSPIRED LENSMAN, OPENS "SUSHI-GRADE" COFFEEHOUSE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA'S COAST RANGE

It's a chilled graybird October morning in the sleepy town of Pemberton, B.C., and snow is already stacking up in the alpine. Chris Ankeny, long respected for his big-mountain snowboarding skills and in more recent years for his evocative backcountry photography, awakens well before dawn to stoke the fires on his latest project-the Mount Currie Coffee Company. Juiced by entrepreneurial mojo-and more importantly by one of his meticulously crafted cappuccinos-Chris is ready to open the doors to the local throngs who are quickly succumbing to their newfound addiction.

Ankeny, who cut his teeth in the mountains of southwest Montana, moved to B.C. two winters ago with his accomplice, Lisa Komuro. Having ticked a good percentage of the plumb lines in Montana over the years, Chris and Lisa were keen to move to a new zone, one offering a stable maritime snowpack combined with massive, high-angle relief. They chose Pemberton/Mount Currie area, a winding, 45-minute drive North of Whistler. Having since fallen head-over-heels for their new "backyard," and all its un-trammeled potential, Chris needed to figure a way to sustain his snow-centric, ex-patriot existence. As someone who's long enjoyed the sensory satisfaction and epiphany of a premium coffee, he's just further connected the dots.

With its chocolate industrial ceiling, bamboo counters, guru roasted, 49th parallel bean (pulled at exacting temperature... 201 degrees for 24 seconds), and gaping view of the Mount Currie massif, it would appear Ankeny is onto a worthy re-invention. Asked how his blossoming photo career dovetails with his new boutique java enterprise, Chris points to the walls adorned with Komuro's brilliant paintings and his crisply lit images. "We're going to need to rotate fresh art on the walls quite frequently, don't you think?"

Made my periodic trip down to Vancouver today to pick up supplies and dropped in on my friends at 49th Parallel to see what was up. Here are some pictures of their setup...it is really quite impressive. Today was big!

-Final inspections were passed. Signs and artwork were hung. The stoke is growing as we approach opening day.

More and more are dropping in for repeat samples and a gander. Lisa P has been baking off some sample tasty bakies and she is not letting us down to say the least! The food is going to be off the hook...

The question of the week is "when are you opening?"
"Soon.." I say, until then....come on by and catch a buzz!

HOLY! Can't really believe that we are almost there....the light is now visible and getting brighter by the day. Really stoked on how the shop is shaping up and can't wait to open the doors and start serving some amazing spro! We've had the Synesso (finest espresso machine in the universe!) hooked up for the past 2 weeks and it really has been hard to get anything done because all we want to do is pull shots, pull more shots, sample, ponder, and repeat!.. but I must say it makes the late nights much easier to handle. We are having our second shipment of beans from 49th Parallel sent tomorrow..these guys are doing it right, such amazing flavor. Can't wait to turn on this community to some nectar. We are working on the website, until it is done check back here..I will try and stay on the posts and keep them fresh. If you are in the neighborhood, drop in on us for a sample. Enjoy the buzz!
